After a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease, the family matriarch Beatrice Kalmus-Duffy passed away on September 9, 2003, at age 86. (Her obituary.)

Although Grandma's health quickly deteriorated after attending Erin's wedding in Chicago, the family agreed it was her wishes not to take heroic measures to keep her alive; rather, she would have wished for nature to take its course. As the doctors advised us that her death was imminent, family members began arriving from out of town, gathering in Grandma and Earl's small apartment, comforting her as well as one another. |
