We arrived mid-afternoon and the boys were so curious as to what to expect. The flight to Mexico was uneventful, and the weather when we arrived was hot and humid, very tropical. We hired a taxi to take us to the Punta Norte, where we could board the boat taking us to Isla Mujeres.

Here are some images of our weeklong stay on the island.

Our hotel the Roca Mar is on the east side of the island, and the boats from the mainland come ashore on the west shore. All along the town's west shorefront are the small thatch-roofed restaurants, bars, and souvenir spots selling their various ware. After being on the island for a few days, we shopped along the seaside for souvenirs, the boys tried on sombreros and looked quite the tourists.

Usually in the afternoon, when the sun was at its highest and hottest, we retreated to our hotel balcony where the shade was plentiful and the ocean breeze was constant; here we battled a few games of backgammon to pass the time until dinner.

If dinner seemed too far off (like THAT ever happens with three boys) and there was a pressing need to replenish the carbs lost to snorkeling or bodysurfing, we would pass the late afternoon snacking on native treats, like Mexican Pringles.

The local mercado (market) was a short stroll away and we kept flavorful snacks always on hand.

Our balcony faced the sunrise, so the early light could shake you from the bed if you weren't expecting the brightness or warmth.

Needless to say, a day at the beach, followed by great native meals and the occasional evening swim or basketball game, required us to nightly recharge our batteries. As you can see by Eli sleeping, some of us had batteries that required additional recharging.
